Situated
on the banks of river Ganga, Bhagalpur is a historic
city. It is situated 220-Km south east of state
capital Patna and 410 Km North West of Calcutta.
Because of its location it has always been strategically
important for the state. The city is well known
for its sericulture, manufacture of silk yarn. The
silk is of distinct and special type, and popularly
known as the Tusser silk. The city has major road
and rail connections and trades in agricultural
produce and cloth. Major industries include rice
and sugar milling and woolen weaving. The surrounding
region includes an alluvial plain in the north and
forested uplands of the Chota Nagpur Plateau to
the south. The area of Bhagalpur District is 5589
Sq. Km and the population is around 35 lakhs.

The
city is the seat of Tilkamanjhi Bhagalpur University
established in 1960. Formerly called Sujaganj, Bhagalpur
was constituted a municipality in 1864.The description
of the place can be found in Great Indian epics
of Ramayana and Mahabharata. In these epics the
place has been described as the kingdom of Anga,
with its capital at Campa.
The Vikramshila University of Pala period still bids welcome to tourists from far away places. The cave of Barari and the temple built by cutting rocks near Kalganj are the places to visit. There is a huge temple of Lord Vishnu located at the south of the city. The Shiva temple of Akhatrinath is located in the middle of the river.

Mandar
Hill is 30 Km south from Bhagalpur is believed to
have been used for the Sagar Manthan according to
Hindu mythology. The marks of the snake around the
hill used for the Manthan and the footprints of
Lord Vishnu can be seen on this hill. There is also
a beautiful lake at its peak. Narsingh Bhagwan Cave
Temple is also situated at the peak of the hill.
Vikramshila was famous for Buddhist education, but it had earned a worldwide reputation in other different faculties like Hindu Philosophy and Tantra Sadhana etc.
