Haryana carved out of the original state of Punjab came into being in 1966 . It is a case of success story, having being turned into a Green Land of India . It was the first state to electrify all its villages . The state has a very fertile land and courtesy a network of canals it is now the granary of India.
The major irrigation projects are Western Yamuna Canal, Bhakra Canal system and Gurgaon Canal. The state has also completed Jui Loharu and Sewani lift irrigation schemes. Jawaharlal Nehru irrigation scheme, the biggest of its kind shall be soon completed.
Haryana has some of the best Universities like Maharishi Dayanand University at Rohtak and Kurukshetra University at Kurukshetra. Haryana's history dates back to vedic age . The state is proud to be the home of legendary Bharata Dynasty which gives the name Bharat to India . It has the privilege of being the place of Kurukshetra , the site of the epic battle of Mahabharata between the Kauravas and Pandavas.
Modern Haryana is also a base of many industries. It produces the largest number of Tractors in the country at Faridabad. The handloom products of Panipat have earned special reputation for its exquisite hand -tufted woollen carpets and colourful handloom products.
The tourism department of Haryana established its leadership in the field by setting up exotic motels, resorts almost every 30 kms on all its highways. The state has a very rich culture and heritage. |

History

The history of the state goes back to the period of the epics. Kurukshetra, where the great battle of Mahabharata was fought between the Kauravas and Pandavas, is situated in Haryana.
The state was the home of the legendary Bharata Dynasty, which gave the name 'Bharat' to India.
Haryana continued to play an part in the history of India till the coming in of the Muslims and the rise of Delhi as the capital of British India. In 1857, the people of Haryana joined the Indian leaders in the revolt against the British Government.
On Nov 1, 1996 Haryana was formed as a linguistic state, with the Hindi speaking areas of Punjab being assigned to it.

Economy

Haryana is India's fastest growing state, offering it's citizens, the third highest per capita income. It was the first state in which all villages were provided with Electricity.
There are over 10,000 small scale industries in the state out of which, Gurgaon remains to be the fastest growing commercial hub. The agricultural development, in the state, has been outstanding. There has been a manifold rise in the production of food grains, sugarcane, oilseeds and cotton. Haryana often referred to as 'the milk pail of India', it has a per capita per day availability of the milk at 579 gms against the Indian average of 180 gms.
The major industries are cement, sugar, paper, cotton, textiles, glassware, motor cycles, sanitary wares , hand tools , cotton yarns , vanaspati, ghee and canvas shoes. They are the largest producers of tractors in the country. Haryana contributes 11.2% of it's population to the Indian army.

Climate

Haryana has a very pronounced climate - very hot summers, with the mercury reaching an all time high in the months of May and June and very cold in winters, January being the coolest month.
