For thousands of years, from the days of the Mahabharata, people have been congregating at Kurukshetra for salvation. A dip in the holy tanks of the Brahma Sarovar or Sannihit Sarovar here, is said to do the trick, which makes it one of the holiest pilgrimage centres in India. Kurukshetra is the land between the holy rivers Saraswati and Dhrihaswadi where the Vedic civilization was born. A place of myths, legends, great battles, empires and the canvas of the epic Mahabharata, it is also the birth place of the most sacred text of the Hindus, the Bhagwad Gita. It is a city of holy tanks and lakes and though it is a modern, well-developed town, its character is unmistakably religious. All the same, if you expect to find a great battlefield, where Arjuna learnt the meaning of dharma, you will be greatly disappointed. |

Geography
Kurukshetra is basically a city, which revolves around two main streets, Pipli Road and Station Road. The main exit from the station is on Station Road that stretches all the way up to Sannihit Sarovar. All the shops and banks are situated on this road. The other side of the station is the new model town with various sectors housing the residential complexes and the administrative buildings. Beyond Pipli and Station Road is the town of Thanesar, which was the original township of Kurukshetra, and rose to glory under the Maurya King Harshavardhan. From Station Road if you turn left you hit Pehowa Road.
