Situated at an altitude of 1219 meters in the lap of Dhauladhar range.Set amidst the hills the small and clean exquisite town of Palampur is bejeweled with lush green terraced fields,the majestic deodar trees, beautiful tea gardens, pine forests the snow clad and breath taking Dhauladhar range with its imposing sky high peaks. It is a beautiful spot in Kangra valley. Palampur has beautiful gardens and lovely walks. It has a moderate climate which is suitable for all type of the tourists. The Agriculture University is located here. Many short and long walks/treks originate from here. It has a quite a reasonable accommodation and is well connected by rail, road and air. An amusement park with cable car is being developed to attract more and more tourists. Nearby is Neogal khad a 300 meters wide yawning chasm through which gushes the Bundla stream that become roaring trrent during the monsoon. The thundering water in the 300 meters wide chasm is a never to be forgotten sight.

Andretta
Just 13 km from Palampur is the charming village of
Andretta where once lived ,a few years ago Mrs.
Norah Richards, pioneer of rural theatre in India, lover
of mountains and ardent disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. Her
tall slender figure enveloped in voluminous black silk
skirt and topped by a crown of snowy white hair, striding
along the walks, is still remembered endearingly by the
local dwellers that include Sardar Shobha Singh. A
renowned artist, he gained prominence for his paintings of
the immortal ill fated Punjabi lovers, Sohni Mahiwal, Omar
Khayyam and Heer Ranjha.
Neogal Park
Is at distance of 1 km from Palampur giving an enchanting
view of the gigantic Dhauladhar and Neogal river.
Bir & Billing
Bir, surrounded by tea gardens and an amphitheater of low
hills, is an idle landing ground for hang/para gliders.Bir
has Buddhist Monasteries that are worth visiting. Fine
Tibetan handicrafts are also produced here. Billing up in
the hills, 14 km from Bir. Himachal Pradesh came in the
news in 1984 when an international Hang Gliding rally was
organized at Billing, a place 20 km from Palampur where
some expert hang gliders of the world participated. They
rated this place as one of best in the world. In the month
of May/June a tented colony is set up by H.P. Tourism to
facilitate Hang gliders. At this time all the roads lead
to Billing.
Jogindernagar
Jogindernagar is 37 km from Palampur a big hydro electric
project here is a living tribute of man to nature in the
raw where he has harnessed and tamed the wildness of a
roaring river for his betterment.Here, an electric trolley
takes the visitors up the steep, rocky face of a 2500
meters high mountain and then drop sharply on the other
side to Barot where reservoir is located . A power station
at Bassi is 5 km from jogindernagar and next to it, is
Machinhar where fishing is not permitted as it considered
a sacred place but it is famous as a breeding spot for
fish. |
