Himachal is the land inhabited by simple,god fearing and colourful people who are great believers in the powers and blessings of their local deities.They bring their deities to the fairs to celebrate the occasions. They dance,enjoy wearing colourful dresses and ornaments on these fairs.In addition they make purchases and take the required articles back to their homes.In view of this,Kullu Dussehra,Manimahesh Chhari Yatra and Lavi fair are celebrated at state level where government makes all necessary arrangements of water,electricity,accommodation and law & order.Culturally,it is an amalgam of Shiva and Shakti cult of which their social life has become the synthesis of all traditional observances connected with these fairs and festivals.A brief description of some of these fairs and festivals can easily be combined with treks around these places. 

There are some 2000 deities worshipped in Himachal Pradesh and numerous fairs and festivals are held in their honour.There are others that began as if just yesterday- and have added their colours to the grand college.From religion to trade,from seasons to sports and month by month here is a joyous celebration of life.

Halda

Halda festival celebrated in Lahaul,which is a more private celebration of the event.Along the valleys of Chandra and Bhaga rivers,a few numbers of every household step out with lit cedar twigs to a west oreinted place selected by the "Lamas" .These slender branches form the first flames of a bonefire which is then dispersed.Shiskar Apa the goddess of wealth is worshipped, and dances continues for a couple of days. 

Lohri or Maghi

The festival of Lohri is celebrates in the most areas of Himachal Pradesh. This is the traditionally mid winter season and also commemoratethe last sowing of Ravi crop. Community bonfire, dancing and folk songsmark the day. 

Phagli

Phagli is another important festival of the Lahaul valley.Phagli nam Derived from the month of Phagun the last month of winter and beginning of the spring season. 

Makar Sankrati

The festival of makar Sankrati is celebrated with great fun and festivity at solan 48 km from Shimla on Kalka Shimla highway . 

More contemporary events come in the form of the National Snow Statue Competition at Kufri,The folk dance compitition on Republic day at Shimla, and the water sports regatta at Kangra's Pong Dam.

Basant Panchmi

Basant panchmi marks arrival of spring season in lower part of state. The sky filled with colourful kites.

Winter Carnival

In the month of February and peaks season of skiers this impressive festival celebrated with lot of fun at Manali. 

Gochi

In the Bhaga valley ia an unusual festival when the villagers celebrate the birth of male childern below the age of six are also performed-and a lighter side comes with the snow balling every ckild participates in. 

Baba Barbhag Singh Mela

The festival of Baba Barbhag Singh held at Mairi in Una district In the month of februrary and dedicated to sage Baba Barbhag Singh was renowed for his spritual powers. 

Ritual dances and an unbelievably rich imager mark Lossar.This is celebrated in Buddhist areas throughout the state-while Lahaul's monasteries have some of the most spectacular performances.On its, eve the stylished Chhaam dance and elaborate costumes and masks,commemorate the assassination of the crual Tibetian king.Langdrama in the 9yh cetuary offen-though wrongly-called the devil dance,it symbolises the triumph og good over evil. 

Holi

As celebrated most part of the country Holi is also celelibrated in Himachal pradesh.The festival of colour and fun thousand of devotee throng toholy shrine at Ponta Sahib in sirmour district situated on bank of river Yamuna. Holi is also celebrated in Palampur and Sujaanpur. 

Shivratri Fair

Shivratri fair helf in mandi Town in between february and march every year. The fair of shivratri goes about weak long, well decorated hundreds of local Gods and Goddess enter the mandi town. First stop over of the deities in mahadev temple and then at Bhootnath Temple to pay their homage to lord Shiva.The weak long festival celebrate with dance ,music 
and dramas. Shiv ratri fair is also celebrated at Baijnath’s Shiva temple in Kangra district. 

Nalwari Fair

This fair basically a cattle fair .buying and selling cattles done here. Local artist entretain the people on occasion of nalwari fair. Wrestling matches also held here the fair is held in the month of march. 

Bala Sundri Fair 

The fair of Bala Sundri held in Trilokpur near Nahan in Sirmour district at the temple of Goddes Bala sundri which was build in 1573 by king Deep Prakash. 

Chait, the first month of lunar calendar is celebrated by the dancing of women in Kullu and by folk singing in Chamba.At the shrine of Deotsidh on the district border of Hamirpur and Bilaspur a month long fair spans March and April.
