As one of the earliest outposts of the British in the North East of lndia, Shillong has always been the meeting point of traditional cultures and cosmopolitan styles. As one of India's best known hill resorts for many decades, it has its very own charms and attractions and its own following of regular seasonal visitors! Shillong, (alt. 1496 m) the capital city derives its name from the manifestation of the creator called Shulon& born to a peasant girl, but he bestowed the art of democratic governance and rule of justice in the formation of the princely state of Shyllong (Hima Shyllong); which subsequently bifurcated into Mylliem State and Yhyrim State in 1830. Today, the Iewduh Market in the heart of Shillong, the biggest in the North East, under the administrative supervision of the Mylliem State, is a must for every tourist, to experience the feel and taste of local colour. How to Reach Air - The nearest Airport is Umroi (32 km), daily Vayudoot Service connects Shillong to Calcutta. Besides Indian Airlines and other private airlines has its flights from Guwahati to Calcutta, Delhi, Imphal and Bagdogra. Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation's buses run daily between Shiflong and Guwahati Airport. Private Taxies are also availabl- at Guwahati airport for travel to Shillong. The journey taking around 4 hours. Rail : Guwahati (100 km) is the nearest rallhead for Shdiong which is connected with the rest of the country. Regular deluxe buses and taxis ply between Guwahati and Shillong. The road between Shiflong and Guwahati is a dream for motorists. Road : Shillong is connected by a network of roads with all important cities of NE Region. Some important road distances are : Gtmahati - 100 km, Imphal -614 km. Kaziranga-294 km, Kohhna-469 km Itanagar - 481 km. Local Transport : Taxis are easily available from 6AM to 8 PM but do not run on meters. Please make sure about your destination and bargain the fare at the onset. Most Cab-drivers can speak broken Hindi or English. City buses and mini buses are also available from morning to evening. As these vehicles do not move on numbered routes, it is advisable to enquire about their destination prior to boarding.

Places To See

Shillong Peak
An ideal picnic spot, 1Okms. from the city, 1965 metres above sea level, offers a pano- ramic view of the scenic countryside, is also the highest point in the state. In the evening the city lights below appear like a star-studded abyss.

Sohpetbneng Peak
1,343 metre, 2Okms from Shiflong, regarded as sacred by the Hynfiiewtrep people, is set against a beautiful scenic view against the backdrop of a sacred forest. The umbilical heavenly peak, offers to fill the spiritual void and emptiness, to those who seek and desire solace and peace of mind.

Ward's Lake 
Located in the heart of Shiflong, offers you the most pleasant beauty spot. The lake with gradually undulating grounds, hemmed in by lush greens, has a charming winding walk-a-way in the midst of rolling flower-beds and fairyland lighting. The lake has a strikingly beautiful arched bridge. Boats of all sizes and shapes are available while the cafeteria provides you with refreshments.

Umiam Lake
Umiam Khwan (Barapani) 17 kms from Shillong, offers water sports facilities including sailing, watersking, water scooter. A quiet holiday at the Orchid Lake Resort, and the adjacent Nehru Park.

State Museum 
Located at the State Central Library complex, visitors can get a glimpse of the lifestyle and heritage of the people.

Butterfly Museum
A private enterprise at Riatsamthlah, Shdiong, displays a variety of butterflies and beetles mounted on wall plates.Other notable breathtaking beauty spots are Lady Hydari Park. Don Bosco Square, St. Paul's Cathedral, Botanical garden etc.

Waterfalls
A captivating uphill drive, about 1Okms off Shillong, through the idyllic country scenario will take you to the most frequented Elephant Waterfall a real feast to the eyes and mind amongst the cheerful blooms of Rhododendron and sonor- ous chirping of colourful birds. World's fourth tallest waterfall- Nohkalikat is at Cherrpunjee, 56 kms from Shillong. Meghalaya is the land of Waterfall. Nature has, indeed blessed Meghalaya abundantly. The awe-inspiring waterfalls are Mowsmai, Sweet, Bidon, Bishop, Spread Eagle etc.
