Aizwal

A very interesting tradition of the Mizos, is the code of ethics which revolves around "Tlawmgaihna" an untransiatable term which roughly means that every Mizo is duty bound to be hospitable, kind, unselfish and helpful. The Mizos form a closeknit society with no class distinctions, no discrimination. The Mizos have the second highest literacy rate in the country. Some of their clans are the Lusei, the Pawi, the Lakher, the Hmar, and the Ralte.Christianity is their main religion. Christianity has brought changes in their social life and outlook-western lifestyles and modern education have had their impact-but the cultural tradi- tions of the Mizos have weathered the onslaught of,change they retains their vigour, colour, richness and sheer loveliness.

Culture

Many of the present Mizo customs are a mixture of old Mizo traditions and Western patterns of life. Although a dilution of heritage characterises the passage of time in most cultures, pride in the identity of Mizo culture and its preservation makes this state stand apart.

Dances

The Mizos boast of a number of folk and community dances that have been handed down over the generations. It is in these dances that the visitor can glimpse the tribal heritage of the Mizos in all its exotic hues. Most important of the dances are Cheaw (the bamboo dance), Khuaflam, Solkia and Chheih lam. Interestingly none of these dances were intended for the stage. They evolved through community Involvement and participation.

Crafts

One has to see them to believe the Intricate traditional designs woven by the Mizo women, born weavers who produce what can only be described as art on their looms. The Mizos have held on to certain patterns and motifs that have come down through the ages. These designs have become deeply rooted in their tribal consciousness and have become part of the heritage of the Mizos. The traditional craft of Mizos can also be seen in their exquisite cane and bamboo work-where both utifitarian and decorative pieces find pride of place.
