On December 1, 1963, Nagaland became the sixteenth State of the Indian union. This narrow strip of mountainous territory is bounded by Assam on the West, Myanmar on the East, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam on the North and Manipur on the South. The state consists of seven Districts viz. Kohima, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Wokha, Zunheboto, Phek and Mon and the population is almost entirely tribal. The sixteen tribes and sub-tribes inhabiting this smelt state have a passion for dances and festivals which they celebrate with gay abandon amidst a riot colours. The state is endowed vath a kaleidoscopic landscape of blue hills, green valleys, snake-like meandering streams and rivers flowing through mountains and deep gorges. Rich varieties of flora and fauna adorn the land.
The Na gas, who live both in Nagaland and in neighbouring Manipur, have stepped gracefully into the late 20th century with their roots still firmly planted in their traditional culture. Smartly groomed men and women wear western clothes which would be accepted by the fashion conscious in the streets of London, Paris and Rome. But they walk past gates carrying motifs which were old before these European cities were horn. Traditional Naga shawls are a treasure for the tourist but they still carry a deep, social message for every Naga, and though the hill and valleys and flowers unfold an undiscovered land to the visitor, every hill, every valley and every flower speaks to the Naga,s out of a past that has no end and no beginning.
The Nagas have a saying that dawn is the time when the clouds still sleep in the valleys. Come share in the gentle waking of the clouds in beautiful
Nagaland.
