Konark Dance Festival  | Puri Beach Festival

They are celebrated in all their beauty, charm and fun-loving spirit. With events ranging from solo dance performances, fashion shows to rock shows, these festivals delight visitors and locals alike and offer a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with the local populace and enjoy the many splendoured charms of Orissa.

Konark Dance Festival

Described as a poem in stone, the Sun temple at Konark is the crowning glory of the temple architecture of Orissa. As a fitting tribute to the majestic monument, eminent classical dancers of India get together during the Konark Festival every year from 1st to 5th December to present live performances of their art. When the sun sets in the horizon and the stars appear in the sky, the open-air auditorium against the backdrop of the floodlit temple reverberates with the beats of Raga and Tala to fill the air. The classical extravaganza is a journey through ecstasy.

The 11th Konark Festival was organised with great pomp and splendour in the Open Air Auditorium at Konark between 1-5 December. The annual classical dance fiesta which has established itself as an important event in the cultural calendar of the country was formally inaugurated on 1st December by Sri M.M.Rajendran, H.E. the Hon'ble Governor of Orissa. Sri Surendra Nath Nayak, the Hon'ble Minister of Panchayati Raj and Sri Bijayashree Routray, the Hon'ble Minister of Tourism & Culture attended as the Guests of Honour. The Open Air Auditorium against the back drop of the aesthetically floodlit Sun Temple bore a festive look and was packed to capacity by an appreciative audience during the five day long fete. 

The cultural renderings of "Arpana" - Social & Cultural Centre, Chennai in Bharat Natyam style and the Odissi Ballet presented by the Odissi Research Centre, Bhubaneswar enthralled the audience on the inaugural evening. The succeeding evenings witnessed an array of classical exposition of Kathak, Odissi, Chhow and Manipuri dances presented by Padatik Dance Centre, Calcutta, Kala Bikash Kendra, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj Chhow Nrutya Pratisthan, Baripada and "Abarta", Bhubaneswar. Scintillating Odissi & Manipuri performance presented by the artistes of Kala Bikash Kendra, Cuttack and Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy, lmphal provided a grand finale to the classical extravaganza. 5,929 domestic and 265 foreign tourists witnessed the festival. 

A craft mela was also organised on the occasion by the District Administration. The festival formally concluded on 5th December, Sri Naveen Patnaik, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Orissa graced the closing evening as the Chief Guest with Sri Surendra Nath Nayak, Hon'ble Minister, Tourism Panchayati Raj and Sri Bijayashree Routray, Hon'ble Minister, Tourism & Culture as Guests of Honour. 

Puri Beach Festival 

The Puri Beach Festival is an out and out fun lovers fest. Conducted by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Orissa (HRAO), the festival is a celebration of Orissa, in all its beauty, charm and fun-loving spirit. With events ranging from Fashion shows to rock shows, the Puri Beach festival delights visitors and locals alike. Held on the beautiful beach at Puri, it offers a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with the local populace and enjoy the many splendoured charms of Orissa.

The Puri Beach Festival is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, the Department of Tourism, Government of Orissa, Development Commissioner of Handicrafts and the Eastern Zonal Cultural Center, Calcutta.
