History

Approximately more than 2000 years ago Uttar Pradesh was a component of Ashoka’s great Buddhist domain. Later it became an element of the Mughal dynasty and foe a few years Agra was its capital. Presently, Agra is renowned for the most ideal of Mughal masterpieces, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Taj Mahal. More recently the Mutiny took place in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh in 1857. Some of the most regrettable and dramatic proceedings took place.

After the British took away are freedom Agra was amalgamated with Avadh, it was then that Uttar Pradesh was known as United Province. But after independence it was renamed as Uttar Pradesh.

Since independence seven of the nine Prime Ministers originated from Uttar Pradesh. A few of which are–Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Singh, and Indira Gandhi.

Culture

The Kathak dance style, nurtured in Uttar Pradesh, is the most popular form of classical dance in India. Old centres of learning - Varanasi, Allahabad, Lucknow - were local points for classical music and dance. This is the home of many a great artiste: Hin- dustani classical vocalist Siddheshwari Devi, Kathak dancers like Birju Maharaj and mainstream actors like Amitabh Bachchan. Today, foreign nationals have also learnt this elegant dance form to perfection: the beautiful Veronique Azan being one example. The songs and dances of the countryside are significant features of local culture. They include the kajari of Mirzapur and Varanasi; the Alha Udal, a folk epic; and various village dances.

Climate
The entire state, except for the northern region, has a tropical monsoon climate. In the plains, January temperatures range from 12.5Ί-17.5Ί C and May records 27.5Ί-32.5Ί C, with a maximum of 45Ί C. Rainfall varies from 1,000-2,000 mm in the east to 600-1,000 mm in the west.
Religion

Uttar Pradesh is an amalgamation of all the religions in India, ranging from Hinduism to Buddhism to Islam to Jainism to Christianity. Being such a colourful and versatile state no one can find such a harmonious blend in any other state in India. The tourists can see theses influences in various corners of Uttar Pradesh.

Hinduism can be searched in various temples such as Hanuman Temple situated at Panki, Kasi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi, Sun Temple at Mahoba. The journey of all the Char Dhams portray that Hinduism is commonly preached in Uttar Pradesh. Dips in the sacred Ganga River and the various rituals performed by the purohits show that Hinduism is a dominating religion. The famous Lakshmana Ghat where Lord Rama’s brother, Lakshman is said to have committed suicide also reflects Hinduism’s legendary past.

Islam is also very prominent in Uttar Pradesh as the Taj Mahal –a lament in marbel portrays it all. Islamic architecture speaks in volumes as the cities of Agra and Fatehpur Sikri along with their array of architectural monuments (tombs, mosques, etc.) still stand majestically over centuries. The city of Lucknow is also influenced entirely by Islam. Monuments like Rumi Gate, Bara Imambara and the Shahnajaf Tomb echo the Islamic dominance.

The most significant city in Uttar Pradesh is Ayodhya. The Hindus claim that Ayodhya was Ramajanambhumi but according to the Muslims this monument was constructed beneath the remains of the Babri Masjid built by Babur. This shows the blend of the two main religions.

Jainism is also prominent in this state. The essence of this great religion and its preachings is palpable in the cave temples, in the elaborately decorated carved stones and in the numerous illustrated manuscripts. Spread across Uttar Pradesh the innumerable Jain Shrines speak of a myriad intimate association with the lives and activities of the Jain Tirthankaras. These shrines reflect the message of peace, non-violenc, love and enlightenment.

The Christians in Uttar Pradesh also have religious places to visit. There are magnificently built churches, which adorn Uttar Pradesh. Christchurch and All Soul’s Memorial Church are a few monuments, which are strikingly attractive. These churchs successfully reflect the presene of Christianity.

So one can see the blend of religions, which ornament Uttar Pradesh giving the tourists an opportunity to explore all the corners of the prominent religions.

People

Two ethnographic groups inhabit the state--Mongoloid peoples in the far north near the Tibetan border and Aryan-Dravidian people in the plains and the hill and plateau region of the central and southern part of the state. Hindus constitute more than 80 percent and Muslims, more than 15 percent of the population. Hindi is the mother tongue of most, with about 15 percent speaking Urdu. The western plain is the most urbanized region. Agriculture is by far the most important sector of the state's economy, employing about three-fourths of the work force.
