Forest Research Institute
Established by the British in the early years of this century, the Institute is one of the finest of its kind in the world. Across the six galleries of its Museum are laid out some of the best collections of specimens of flora and fauna.
Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology
Another place of interest worth a visit. A museum containing rock samples, semi-precious stones and fossils is the centre of attraction here.
Tapkeshwar Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is beside a stream, which is directed to flow onto the lingam. During Shivratri, a large fair is held here.
Robbers Cave
Popularly known as Guchhu Pani, it is situated 8 km from Dehradun. The last kilometer has to be covered on foot. The cave is a picnic spot, surrounded by hills. Here, water vanishes underground only to reappear after a few yards in the form of a stream.

Lakshman
Sidh: 12 km. Built in homage to a saint of this name, it is a popular picnic spot on the road to Rishikesh.
Sahastradhara: 14 km. A cold sulphur water spring, having high medicinal value, the dripping caves and a refreshing bath on the Baldi river, all set in a breathtaking environ, offer an exhilirating and unforgettable experience. An ideal place for family picnic.
Rajaji National Park: 15 km. This thickly forested sanctuary spreads all the way to Dehradun. It is known for its elephants, barking deer, leopards, sambar and peafowl. For reservation at Forest Rest House, contact Director, Rajaji National Park, Dehradun. Phone: (0135)23794.
Mussoorie
Asan Barrage: 43 km. Water sports resort of GMVN, offers water skiing, sailing, boating, kayaking facilities.
Rishikesh
Dak Pathar: 45 km. Site of a hydel project, it has been developed into a picnic spot and recreation centre.
Kalsi: 50 km. Famous for two Ashokan inscriptions recovered here.
Paonta Sahib: 51 km from Dehradun (lying in Himachal Pradesh) is Paonta Sahib, a famous pilgrimage centre for the Sikhs. Overlooking the river Yamuna is the Gurudwara, where Guru Govind Singh wrote the major portion of the Dasam Granth.
Haridwar
Chakrata: 92 km. Chakrata is known for its serene environs and sylvan charm. The northern part of Chakrata district is a heaven for trekkers and nature lovers. Covered with dense virgin forest, dotted with attractive villages, inhabited by Jaunsari tribals is perfect for a quiet holiday.
Mundali (9000 ft) allows skiing during winters
Tiger Fall: The highest fall of the state and the Mahusu Devta temple at Hanol are some other places of interest.
Lakhamandal: 128 km. This is where the Kauravas are said to have built the Laksha Griha (house of lac) to burn alive the Pandavas. There are a number of old temples here, dedicated to Shiva, the Pandavas and Parasuram |

Jhanda Fair
This fair marks the arrival of Guru Ram Rai, the Sikh Guru, at Dehradun. In the year 1699, Guru Ram Rai built a Gurudwara, Guru Ram Rai Darbar and hoisted his flag. Till this day a large fair is held here every year in the month of March/April on the sixth day after Holi and a flag (Jhanda) unfurled at Jhanda Chowk.
Tapkeshwar Fair
6 km from Dehradun is the famous Tapkeshwar Shiv Temple. Annually a fair is held here on Shivratri dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Lakhawar Fair
This fair held at Lakhawar village, during September-October, is very popular in the neighbouring area of Chakrata, 78 km from Mussoorie. The fair reflects the customs and traditions of Garhwali tribes. Activities include cultural programmes and sport competitions. |
