Skiing in the Auli-Garhwal Region

Auli, 16 kms from Joshimath, is an ideal winter resort, run by theSkiing in India Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN), an Uttar Pradesh government undertaking. The divine slopes of Auli, coupled with state-of-the-art facilities provided by GMVN, have made it comparable with the best in the world. The snowy slopes of Auli, are girdled by stately coniferous and oak forests, which cut the velocity of wind to the minimum. Auli offers a panoramic view of many Himalayan peaks. 
Auli offers perfect skiing conditions. Seasonal skiers, have a clean stretch of 10-20 kms of absolute virgin slopes, to ski on. These slopes provide excellent opportunities for cross - country, slalom and downhill skiing events. GMVN has snow beaters, which keep the slopes, ideal for skiing at all times. 


Infrastructure

Simple hotel accomodation and tourist bungalows with hot and cold running water, cable TV, intercom, and attached toilet facilities at Joshimath and Auli.
A four kms long cable car linking Joshimath (1906 mts) with the upper slopes of Auli and ending at Gorson (3016 mts).
16 kms motorable road from Joshimath to Auli.
A 500 mts long ski-lift, and an 800 mts long chair-lift, linking the lower slopes with the upper slopes.
Two snow beaters imported from Germany.
Two snow packing machines for maintenance of ski slopes.
Dressed and improved ski slopes.
Ski equipment available on hire.
Assistance of ski instructors, and skiers from GMVN and Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
Efficient communication available at Auli.
Easy accessibility of medical supplies from Army and civil hospitals, and emergency rescue by helicopter.

Travel Information
Road: Local Transport Union and State Transport buses ply regularly to Joshimath from Rishikesh (253 kms), Haridwar (277 kms), Dehradun (298 kms), and Delhi (500 kms). Auli is a further 16 kms from Joshimath, and can be reached by road.
Rail: The nearest railhead is Haridwar. Connecting trains - (a) Howrah - Dehradun (9 UP), (b) Delhi - Dehradun (41 UP), and (c) Mumbai (Bombay) - Dehradun (19 UP).
Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, 273 kms from Joshimath and 17 kms from Rishikesh.
