With
the exception of a few hilly areas, trains can take
you to any part of the country. There are the "express"
or "mail" trains for intercity transport, and "super-fast
air conditioned" trains mainly between Delhi-Calcutta,
and Delhi-Mumbai.
Trains at a Glance is a publication by the Indian
Railways which gives you all the information required
to travel by train. It is available at information
counters and news-stands at all main stations and
from the Indian Railways agents abroad.
The Palace on Wheels
The Palace on Wheels
is a luxury, air conditioned train that takes you
on a weekly royal journey through Rajasthan. It
leaves Delhi cantonment every Wednesday from September
through April returning the following Wednesday
morning. The success of Palace on Wheels has inspired
other states to start similar projects. The state
of Tamil Nadu recently announced a Temple on Wheels
for a tour of the state. Reservations for the Palace
of Wheels can be made through Indian Railways representatives
abroad or at RTDC, Bikaner house, Pandara Rd, New
Delhi .(Tel: +91-11-3381884 or 3383837).

Buses
can be used to travel to places where trains do
not go, or where buses are faster (routes which
have narrow gauge). Buses vary in price and comfort.
Video coaches are available on longer routes and
buses without video will have some music for you.
There are breaks in the journey at appropriate locations
equipped for such stopovers.
