Other Essentials

The following are a list of other essentials that one should carry as part of travel kit:

Locking device Have separate locks for each piece of baggage. Secure all of them together whenever resting for the night or for a little while in any public place. A small padlock with a chain is recommended.

Multipurpose knife ( ideally, the Victorinox Swiss Army knife ) This is a very handy implement to carry along, especially on travel.

Sarong or sheet or bed cover to double up as a wrap around or bedspread.

"Insect repellants" is a must carry. It can be a lotion or oil. Also include mosquito repellents incense or coils: they come in handy when there’s no provision for mosquito nets at one's place of stay. Mosquito mats may also be carried but to use that, one needs a power connection.

A small torch / flash light along with a spare set of batteries, is a must.

Foreign travellers will need to carry voltage adapters for their electrical equipment. The standard voltage in India is 220V. This is especially recommended for those carrying sensitive equipment like camera peripherals, laptops etc.

Moist tissue for cleaning.

Earplugs to shut out the noise while resting.

Spectacles prescription and a spare set of spectacles, should be carried along. The prescription will help one find another pair in an optician’s at any major city, in case of damage or loss. Contact lens users are advised to carry an extra bottle of cleansing fluid as that might not be readily available in all places.

Dark glasses and hat, is yet another must. The sun could be oppressively bright at certain places.

Sunscreen lotion to prevent burns. Stock a lotion which has a high ph factor, to be able to brave the sun at places like Rajasthan and the beaches in the South of the country. Also carry lip guard to prevent drying of the lips.

An inflamable pillow : comes in handy at places where a bedding may not be adequate. It can be bought for as little as Rs.60 at most travel destinations and railway stations.

Women travellers are advised to carry a whistle to attract attention, whenever in trouble.

A string or light rope should always be carried. It can be used for tying things or even hanging your wash.

Binoculars for the birdwatcher. Not many places will have such equipment available, so it is recommended that one carries their own.

Water bottle and purifying tablets or liquid.

Helmet for the motorcycle enthusiast.

Water proof clothing, if travelling in the hills or in places of heavy rainfall.
