| Theatre
has its roots in ancient Hindu traditions. There have been Sanskrit texts written,
that date back to 200 B.C., which deal with the discipline in much detail.
Though classical theatre has been modified over the ages, different forms
have emerged from different regions of the country and have merged with the classical
form to become what is modern theatre in India - today. Vernacular language adaptations
of the western masters like Chekhov and Brecht have found their way into the Bengali,
Hindi and Marathi stage, which by themselves are of a very high quality. English
language theatres are present in the cities of Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai and Bangalore.
there is a great variety to choose from, if one goes through the dailies.
Folk art, puppetry, street theatre and dance drama are also a part of entertainment.
Events and festivals are generally listed and advertised in the tourism information
offices around the country. |
